March 2, 2012

Extremely quick update:

The fun has begun in Tampa as the bulk of the gang is here…and today I am tired, a sign of things to come for the next few weeks….

Today MLB has agreed to expand the playoffs this season. Initial thoughts are I am ok with the idea….and now that this has been resolved next week some time I will make my yearly predictions.

A HUGE thank you to BobG for the package…you did not have to do that but we both are very happy with the items…see you Mark and Andre next weekend.

Our first game is Sunday after a cool front pushes through late Saturday it should be dry for baseball Sunday afternoon…but a bit cooler only getting near 70…the rest of the week will warm back up to the high 70’s and beyond. If not baseball the rest will be surly appreciated---

News: Steinbrenner cutting payroll….so yes it is time to really enjoy the farm system because that will be the future…

Oh and the Yankees won today 11-0, but they were playing USF (University of South Florida)…

February 29, 2012-Happy Leap year Day!

Wish I was there to see it…Andy Pettitte throwing batting practice. According to roving reporter in the sky JoeP he also saw Terry Francona in the area….why I am not sure…maybe now that he is not the red*ux skipper he wanted to see how a real organization was running spring training. Speaking of Andy, it looks like his role in camp is to hang out as he put it…..I love it!

Everyone wish BillyL the best of luck as he tries to depart from boston to Tampa tomorrow….and as luck has it the first “real” snow of the season just so happens to be falling exactly on the time frame he is leaving for Tampa…I thought my luck was bad…jeez…

Happy belated sixteenth birthday to the Nephew Darryl … either he is getting old or I am ---wait, we both are….SIXTEEN? and to think I recall the days where I “”””tried””””to change his diaper...Partly because I just could not do it and partly because he is a Newcombe, and we are famous for having the most god awful “events” in the bathroom department. I don’t think I need to expand anymore…. (Poor Joyce).

Brett Gardner has committed the Yankees to winning over 100 games. Hmm…I can live with that.

My annual picks for the division leaders in October is coming up soon. I am kinda waiting on MLB to decide if the new added wildcard teams will be added this season or not. If they take too long I will pick the two extra teams anyways.

Can’t wait to see Lou Piniella…

You know what? Screw Bobby Valentine!
Here is the article and quite honestly I agree with Jeter…Valentine must be bored with that crappy team in Fort Myers.

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Yankees are already reacting to Bobby Valentine. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez both commented today from Yankees' camp in Tampa on things Valentine said yesterday.
Valentine, who put his players through relay drills on Tuesday, said yesterday that there was no way the Yankees practiced Jeter's infamous flip play vs. Oakland in Game 3 of the 2001 Division Series.
Speaking about Jason Varitek's career yesterday, Valentine made a funny comment about "beating up" Alex Rodriguez as one of his accomplishments.
On the famous flip play, Jeter ended up on the first-base line and fielded a throw from Shane Spencer in right field that missed two cutoff men. He then backhanded the ball to Jorge Posada, who tagged out Jeremy Giambi to end the seventh inning in a game the Yankees won, 1-0.
“We’ll never practice that. We'll never practice that,’’ Valentine said. “I think (Jeter) was out of position. I think the ball gets him out if (Jeter) doesn’t touch it, personally.
"The Jeter-like simulation today is that idea of what the first baseman and third baseman do as the ball is coming in, because they have to react and maybe change the position of where the shortstop is when the ball’s coming in from right. Because he does have to react to the ball. When you see a ball in flight, you have a chance at those positions to adjust....That was amazing that [Jeter] was there. I bet it’s more amazing to say they practiced it. I don’t believe it.’’
Jeter responded this morning by telling reporters in Tampa, “I mean, we do [practice it]. You’ve seen it. You guys have been here.”
Would Giambi have been out anyway?
“What do you want me to say?" said Jeter. "I mean, really. What am I supposed to say? I don’t think anything. I really don’t. I have no thoughts whatsoever about that.”
Would he have been out?
“No. But who cares? Why are we talking about this? He must be bored over there, huh? I don’t understand.”
Still, practice it?
"Yeah. I don’t flip it home when we practice it. I’m the cutoff guy. He’s the cutoff guy to get the runner at third. We do practice it, but not the flip home. Am I supposed to convince him (Valentine)?
I don’t know Bobby well enough to tell you what he’s trying to do. I could care less, I guess that’s the best way to put it. I just don’t know why it’s being brought up. I don’t know what to tell you."
Was Jeter amused or annoyed by Valentine's comments?
“I’m indifferent, really," said Jeter. "Think about it. We don’t practice it? We do. You guys see it. What else can I say? I was out of position? I was where I was supposed to be."
On other topics, Jeter said the retiring Jason Varitek had "an unbelievable career."
"I’m happy for him," said Jeter. "I enjoyed competing against him all these years. That’s what we should be talking about as opposed to what Bobby said.”
Does Jeter think the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is diminished and Valentine is trying to stir it up?
“No. It’s the same," he said. "I can’t tell you if he’s trying to stir it up. I don’t know why you would have to stir it up. I think our rivalry gets so much attention anyway. But I am not saying that he’s stirring it up, so no headlines tomorrow."
What will you say first time you see him?
“Hey Bobby! That’s about it," said Jeter. "I don’t think it’s that big of a deal, really. A lot of people have said that I wasn’t supposed to be there, but I’ve told you from day one that’s where I’m supposed to be; that’s what we work on. He’s not the first person that said that.”
Alex Rodriguez, commenting on Valentine's "beat up" comments said, "I'm not going to win many battles here when it comes to words, especially against Bobby. I have my new press secretary that should be landing in the next couple days — Reggie Jackson — so I’ll let him handle that."

Pineda—oh stop it already with trying to find something really stupid wrong with the Yankees…the red flags about Pineda (two of them) first, he is overweight by 10 pounds and second he did not take too well to being bombarded with interviewees by his locker after a workout where he threw his new third pitch. Really? Is this earth shattering news? Did Iran actually send off one of their bombs to Israel or something I missed?

Another item that actually made the TV news down here…and again, this is a threat to our national security; A-Rod had his team picture taken in the restroom. Yawn…maybe he had to consolidate events and figured he could knock two things out at once so he can get back to working out.

Someone who I can’t mention because I really just don’t know was in the hospital down here being treated in the ER about back issues. My co-workers husband worked on him but given his code of ethics he will not divulge this info even to his wife. My only idea is George Kontos….

February 27, 2012

Hey there out there…

This past weekend we went to the practices and if you have done ANY reading on how spring training has been going all reports are right on point.

Pineda is huge…everyone, and I mean the entire team that I have seen is in great shape weight wise. Tex and Swisher look great, and aside from the obvious big guys everyone looks again, really good. In fact, I have a lot of optimism with this team. Barring the dreaded injuries we look really darn good.

Raul Ibanez in batting practice hit about 86% of his balls to the left side…I did not see Chavez but heard that he put on a batting clinic on his at bats. Swisher by the way is STILL the clown he is, and I can’t wait to get in our new seats this season in right field even closer to him and his on field antics. One round of batting practice I saw were the Swisher, Granderson, Gardner, Ibanez, Jones group and quite honestly they all looked good. Especially the third round and beyond of batting practice…Gardner had a lot of good at bats where he would have basically been on base, Ibanez as mentioned was hacking everything to the left side and clearly base hits, Swisher, who smacked as he yelled out to the crowd “my first homer this year” looked great…seemed to show a bit more power, Granderson if as I expect will have similar results from last season. Saving this for last is Andruw Jones. Woe…who the heck is this guy? He not only hit several balls over the fence, but two were of the monster variety. Woe Nelly…if he contuse on that tear his threat to take a starting outfield spot may actually be an interesting incentive for all parties involved to do better than each other…because he looks as though means what he is saying.

Speaking of Mr. Swisher. He is the heir apparent to the now vacant “AJ Pie Throwing” duties, which I might add fits his personality to a tee…

JoeP from the left coast is here enjoying the time thus far and the Chris-n-Gary show are on their way now with their cat Patches for the almost month long stay from their Rochester NY home away from home in Tampa. The rest of the gang will be in mostly on the first with mark and BobG in on the 10th (and some other stragglers here and there. Just make sure you travel safe! En route soon are BillyL ‘How Do” from that place near boston, Ron-n-Tina from nippy Vermont, Rich of the Rich-n-Maureen gang (she arrives later with granddaughter) and Mike and Peg are SUPPOSED to be here sometime in March.

From all accounts it appears the usual suspects are in town..you know, the Goose and Guidry’s, Stick Michael, Sweet Lou Piniella will be in cam soon fresh off his new YES Network gig, although the drive into Tampa is no long drive…and who knows, since we are traveling the same direction maybe we will see him on the road. Yogi should be here when the games start…

Roving reporter and my week long eye in the sky while I am at work taking time out to type this has texted that Andy Pettitte is in town and presently signing autographs. I asked JoeP to find out if he was here to pitch – he came back with “we wish he was”….guess that means nope! Maybe he came to make sure Jete and Mo were ok without Jorge…who is missed….

Caught up with most of the Security Guards this weekend, next up will be the ushers who we won’t see until game time – our first game will be this Sunday.

Got tons of pictures already…

New revised roster attached—I have moved Dickerson, who just cleared waivers and is now an official memeber of the AAA Scranton Yankees. We are now at 41 (once Chavez is officially added).

Gas:

Just plan on emptying your wallets if you are coming to Tampa…not sure what the average is but this morning I saw some $3.71 and $3.73 per gallons…by %:00 the prices may be $3.75 for all I know…I give up! In my years alive and driving I clearly recall .87 per gallon in Atlanta circa 1995-1997.

New feature::::: Some fun and/or strange facts about players, Yankee history and WUT KNOT.
Didja Know:

One off the top of my head is didja know that Derek Jeter likes to bake muffins and cookies and in fact had a bunch of kids over a couple of years ago to share his baked goods? This was before St. Jetes was built when he lived in the nearby town of Lutz, Fl.

February 23, 2012

No ill will for AJ from me. I was always an advocate for signing AJ and had hopped against all hope he would turn the years of crappy innings around…over and over…and there were times we saw (and benefited) from the real AJ…wasn’t that the big tag line? “Will the real AJ show up today on the mound?” Well, this question is no longer ours to ponder. My best guess will be he will do very well in Pittsburg, like the way many others do when they leave NY. Some can handle it and some can’t. It’s NY for crying out loud.

“Now that I am part of the Pittsburgh Pirates, I would just like to say how grateful I am to the Yankees organization and the fans. I have no regrets. I got my ring there, I got to play with teammates that not a lot of people get to play with, Hall of Famers, and I played for a great manager in a great city. I take it and run. That chapter's closed and it's time to move on to the next one.”

Final AJ words from me are Good luck and as most of NY has been saying good riddance…for me I will stick with just the “Good luck.”

Let’s get it straight…as I emailed BillyL the other day, I am 99.563% sure this is Mo’s last season, and judging from the recent articles and interviews he is pretty much leading the breadcrumbs to the retirement house himself. So this season look for a lot of eyes on the likes of David Robertson, Rafael Soriano, Joba and other AAA candidates in Scranton to be on a season long test for the new closer role in 2013 and also get used to it! We are all gonna miss Mo. He is one of the truly nice guys on the team that stand out in my mind. He gives a damn about us, the fans…another is Granderson. There is something special about these millionaires that take time to acknowledge the heck out of us, whereas there are others (to remain nameless) who I would personally like to stick my finger in their eyes. I can think of 6 right off the top of my head without even blinking my own eye. I bet most of you know exactly who at least 3 or 4 are. Interestingly enough if you want to read more into the Mo going to retire mystery, the Yankees just signed the mariners former closer David Aardsma. He may not be the next Yankee closer but he may be a person to fill the void for the current Yankee on the roster who will be the closer. He won’t be an impact until 2013 (or maybe a bit earlier as he recovers from Tommy John surgery).

Quote of the week: on Mo retiring from David Robertson.
"I’ll believe it when I see it," Robertson said. "He may have hinted, but you never know; he could Brett Favre us."

The way things stand now:

With the previously expected re-signing of Eric Chavez the DH/utility roles are pretty much set. Ibanez and Jones will split DH and stand in outfield duties. Nunez and can handle second, short and third on occasion and Chavez will fill in for Tex and A-Rod. Bill Hall may be on the bench as insurwance if the Yankees only take 11 pitchers, but I would not expect them to go that route.

BillyL sent a pretty easy guide to follow how the Yankees are looking and it saves me the time to duplicate the same thing…

Starting Lineup (9) Bench (4) Rotation (5) Bullpen (6 of 7)
Derek Jeter Frankie Cervelli CC Sabathia Mariano Rivera
Curtis Granderson Eduardo Nunez Hiroki Kuroda David Robertson
Robinson Cano Chavez Ivan Nova Rafael Soriano
Alex Rodriguez Ibanez/Jones Michael Pineda Boone Logan
Mark Teixeira Phil Hughes/Freddy Garcia Cory Wade
Nick Swisher Hughes/Garcia
Raul Ibanez/Andruw Jones ???
Russell Martin
Brett Gardner

Out of the 5th spot the loser will be in the pen...Pretty simple…The final bullpen spot should be a lefty to go along with Logan. The names in that group are Cesar Cabral, Clay Rapada and Mike O’Conner. Second idea is to get a one inning type guy like Adam Miller or Manny Delcarmen. The multi inning type guy I would not go with because you already have the loser of the 5th spot in either Hughes or Garcia. This is the only real area of competition aside from the backup catcher not just assuming Cervelli is the guy but what about Romine and Sanchez? Do they need more time in Scranton till the call-ups? I would say so unless they just tear the ball of fthe cover this spring, and even then…..

Dickerson is out of options and will be claimed off waivers. I liked him but he has no room at the inn on the Yankee team. Same with Justin Maxwell. If either clears waivers they will be in AAA with Laird, Pena and the rest of the gang. Depending on injuries we may not see them until September.

This n That:

JoeP will be here as the first out-of-towner followed close behind by the Chris-n-Gary traveling show…before the rest of the crew arrives March 1 and beyond. For all that are traveling please travel safe!

We will be heading to training Saturday morning for the official Kevin and Joyce start of the month long activities…

Traffic & Weather update:

Good news is there is no traffic work along the hotel to stadium route. Gas on the other hand is out of control like everywhere else in the country…we are sitting around $3.52 to $3.72 a gallon…or more like $3.63 ish…

Joke of the Blog: (from dad)
Grandma's Boyfriend
A 5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day. Playing with his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and said, 'Grandma, how come you don't have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?'

Grandma replied, 'Honey, my TV is my boyfriend. I can sit in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel good and the comedies make me laugh. I'm happy with my TV as my boyfriend.'

Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus.. Frustrated, she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem.

The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door and there stood Grandma's minister. The minister said, 'Hello son, is your Grandma home?'

The little boy replied, 'Yeah, she's in the bedroom bangin' her boyfriend.'

The minister fainted..

2012 Roster

With AJ now a Pirate the next obvious move was completed as the Yankees have agreed to terms with Raul Ibanez. Also the failed physical of Okajima has opened the door for the Yankees to sign lefty reliever Clay Rapada to a minor league deal, who was most recently with the Orioles who released him--- (I think). He will possibly be a possibly to join Boone Logan in the pen as a lefty specialist….but we will see in due time. I am pulling for the kid Cesar Cabral, the rule 5 draft pick up.

Just so you know I have to like Ibanez because his birthday is a day after mine. He can’t be all that bad.

Next up is Chavez, another move I am behind despite his injuries and all. I like Chavez and thought as A-Rod’s backup last season did just fine…so live with it, my money is on he will be back in pinstripes….but I am known to be wrong sometimes here.

Spent some time at the park Saturday getting the annual “Kevin buys new Yankee shirts shopping” done. Although we come to the park frequently through the year this is when I do the buying, and we usually have our personal escort in the store showing us all the new stuff…and she actually remembers what I have purchased before better than me, gives pointers on what not to get (due to lack of good material workmanship and so on). Heck, we have known her since 2001 for crying out loud….

There were some light workouts going on ahead of actual pitcher and catchers reporting and just so you are aware, they have added makeshift covered bullpens to the field by the player’s parking lot and a newly upgraded conference type structure where they hold the press conferences and dinners by the same field. I believe I mentioned this a while ago. This field has limited availability to get that up close look unlike the other practice field on the grounds. Either way, the way they structure the spring workouts with all the rotating from fields the best bet is still the field by the handicapped parking

Roster:

The long awaited roster as of today is below. You will note I gave (or kept) Ibanez;’s number 29, but that is the same number as Rafael Soriano. One of them will be changing….once it is determined I will adjust. I also added Chaves to the infielder list with an asterisk by his name, but I fully intend to see him back this season. I left his old number 12 in the slot for him.

My list that includes Chavez has 41 on the 40 man roster. The Non Roster Invitees has a total of 27

I gave Clay Rapada his old Oriole number 57…but that number belongs to Mike Harkey, the bullpen coach….

I have also attached the excel file for your own sorting and printing. The below is the lsit in number order for easy viewing.

February 17, 2012 part twooooo

Since my last first email to day (sure that makes sense) some expected and unexpected things took place in baseball and specifically in Yankee land.

First…condolences to the family of Hall Of Fame catcher Gary Carter, former met catcher and leader of the 1986 team that beat the red*ux. He dies near West Palm Beach and was in Hospice trying to recover from brain cancer. He was 57…………..

Moment of silence…

The pie maker has left the stadium and there are no more pies in the clubhouse in the Bronx (unless someone else takes over the job). This will be official pending physicals and MLB approval. AJ’s open ticket now has a home for spring training in Bradenton. Fl where the Pirates are…and we will see them March 20th at Steinbrenner field. The Yankees will get back two players that we may never here from again…but they opened up money for that DH spot. I know---I know---I admit I was 100% into AJ when we got him and always hoped he would turn it around…and I had him as the 5th starter this coming April, if for anything for the money we owed him…I thought he would get the chance to settle into the 5th spot and do ok…but that was a big hope in my heart….one I no longer have to ponder. Good luck AJ and Seeya!!!!

Tim “old man” Wakefield is set to retire from the red*ux knuckleballer. Jimmy crack corn and >>>

Really, please do not lose any sleep over the Okajima physical failure. I did not want him anyway (agreed billyL).

Enough out of me…..time to get the heck out of dodge for the weekend.
